Shots On Goal - Flames 30 Oilers 26
Tough loss. It's the kind of loss that could cost you a potential playoff spot at the end of the year. Essentially, The Flames did to the Oilers what the Oilers did to Nashville last night. Without Taylor Hall, the Oiler offense went very pop gun, they were very timid to shoot the puck and I'm not sure why. They had traffic in front all night and there were a lot of passed up shots. I'm not sure if it was by design or a timidness or fatigue that they just couldn't generate a lot tonight. The defense had a strong game for 55 minutes then it all fell on them like a house of cards. This is the type of game that Ben Eager need to play more early, to soften up the Flames D, so they can take advantage of them in third. The Flames D was still pretty fresh at the end of the game and the Oilers had the heavy legs. It was a game where they just didn't have quite enough in the tank. The Oilers can't live on rolling three lines forever, eventually they will have to even out the lines at some point. Jeff Petry is a player they need to play full time, he is their most mobile Dman and is able to skate the puck out of danger. Barker should be the one sitting if Whitney is back full time. They need Sutton and Smid to play for toughness purposes. As a positive, I have really been impressed with the center play on this team over the last two games. Nugent-Hopkins, Belanger, Horcoff, and Lander have all played well at especially as good support for the defense. It's something I wouldn't break up anytime soon. I know some people have Lander on the bubble when players get healthy, but to me he stays and the others move around him.
Player of the Game:
- Corey Potter. It's somewhat of a shocker I know, but I like the way this guy plays. He's calm, composed, shoots the puck when he's supposed to play, play the body when he needs to. Along with Petry, this two should be playing full time at the moment, game in, game out. Barker and Peckham should be the healthy scratches right now. Fed a nice apple to Gilbert for a one-timer on the only goal.
Goat of the Game:
- Ladislav Smid. I hate to give it to him because he has played so well to start the year, but his play on the winning goal looked like old Ladi Smid. Dubnyk makes a save, puck pops up in the air, he swats at it, misses it, lands behind him, he has no idea where it is, and Tanguay pots it into an empty net. Just a horrible time for an unfortunate play to happen. Jordan Eberle gets an HM here for overpursuing the zone and allowing Bouwmeester to come behind him and fire the tying goal in the high slot.
Next Game: Thursday October 20, 2011 vs Wild @ Rexall Place on Sportsnet West 7:30 PM MT.
