Shots On Goal - Oilers 21 Canucks 26

Game Notes:
- The Oilers came out slow and eventually cost them the hockey game tonight. It was an ugly first period that saw them down 3-0 after one period. The Oilers defensive coverage was abysmal tonight. Lots of blown coverages and lots of chasing the puck into no man's land. The Oilers defense need to get back to simple defense of covering your area and keeping the play in front of you. I'm not sure what style they are playing these days but its clearly not working. The defense as a whole did not play well tonight and the center coverage from Belanger and Horcoff was subpar. I expect better from two vets who should know how to play their position by now. The person that I thought had the toughest game was Tom Renney. His lines were a disaster again tonight. At some point they need to reunite Smyth-Horcoff-Jones to get some kind of secondary scoring and re-establish a checking line. The kid line is going to face the best checkers in the league from here on out, so its imperative they find other ways to score, not to mention defend. At least have two lines that can hold their own, instead of just one. Essentially it was more of the same that the Oilers have gotten over the years in Vancouver. Get pounded physically, get scored on early and play catch up all game long. If the Oilers ever want to win a game in Vancouver, they need to show up for the opening faceoff. That was the first game of a 7 game road trip.

Player of the Game:
- Jordan Eberle. Again. Eberle has had a nice string of games where he continues to produce. A goal and an assist tonight and continues to lead the team in points. He's a stealthy player that you don't noticed until its to late. He makes quick, decisive plays and his confidence is sky high. Just continues to make plays and contribute offensively. Eberle is really shouldering the offense these days.

Goat of the Game:
- Tom Gilbert. I could put most of the defensemen and Horcoff and Belanger here, but since I pick only one, Tom Gilbert wins tonight. Too much standing around and playing out of position tonight for Tom Gilbert. Many point blank tap-ins tonight for the Canucks, as they were allowed free reign around the Oilers net tonight. I like the fact that Gilbert is playing more physical these days, but he needed to make better reads and move his skates more tonight.

Next Game - Thursday December 29, 2011 vs. Wild @ Minnesota on Sportsnet West 6 PM MT.
